REVIEW
First published September 15, 2008 (Booklist).

Six years after the Super Flu decimated the human population and left most survivors mindless zombies, Molly Anderson, 21, emerges from the fallout shelter her father, Ian, locked her away in to ensure her safety. Ian, a scientist who predicted the end of the world before it came about, gave Molly implants—including razors underneath her fingernails—to help her find her way to him when the time was right. Upon leaving the shelter, she sets off, and runs into a group of fellow human survivors, including her high school sweetheart, Chase Griffith. Chase still hasn’t forgiven Molly for not fleeing to the mountains with him and his friends six years ago, but he realizes accompanying her to see her father might be his group’s only hope for a future. Alternating chapters reveal how the Super Flu emerged to devastate civilization. Readers won’t want to put down this captivating novel, in which Mancusi combines a rip-roaring, thrilling science fiction story with an appealing cast of characters and terrific romantic suspense . —Kristine Huntley
